Today is the Feast of “Christ the King”. Jesus’ only kingly crown was woven of thorns.
Today, Pope Benedict XVI, many clergy and lay Catholics consider the pope to be Christ’s best representative on Earth. Therefore, let us pause today and reflect upon the images of these two men and their respective crowns.
Does one image readily recall the other? If not, why not, and what should we do about it?
Millions of us have left the Vatican's church but we do not stand together in opposition to what the pope and the hierarchy are doing.
ReplyDeleteUntil we stand together and say NO!!!, there will be no reforms in the Roman Catholic Church.
How does the collective of the faithful stand together to reject a church law?
ReplyDeleteThere are several reform groups that organize around this concept. However, there is also the de facto invalidation of laws where people just ignore them. With estimates of more than 90% of married Catholics using birth control, that is one example. The official law has not changed but people just realized that the law had no power over them and ignored it. Similarly a bishop who ordained some women just decided the law was not valid. This supports the overwhelming majority of Catholics who believe that barring women from the priesthood is immoral. Great question. Thanks for posing it. It's worthy of more thought and contributions.
ReplyDeleteThis is not just true of the Vatican - think of the money spent on incense, decorations, even bulletins, ... not to mention chalices, vestments,...
ReplyDeleteJesus told the man to sell everything he had and give to the poor and he would have treasure in heaven. Do church leaders seek their treasure in heaven or in the sanctuary?

But, if you throw out all the pretty dresses and bric-a-brac, the Catholic Church has nothing going for it?
ReplyDeleteexcept salvation as the one true church!!!
